Dennis Nguyễn Quoted in Tax Notes Last Week Regarding Gambling Losses Legislation

Tax Notes quoted Dennis Nguyen, attorney at Taylor Nelson Amitrano LLP, late last week in relation to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act which caps gambling loss deductions. The article, titled “Government to Get Bigger Take of Gambling Income in Tax Bill” highlights how the bill affects a gambler’s ability to deduct losses under the newly passed legislation.  The article is available here. 

The bill amends section 165(d) to define wagering losses as “equal to 90 percent of the amount of such losses during such taxable year.” Dennis explained in the article that limiting the gambling losses to 90 percent undermines the principle behind taxing net economic gain, as it allows full income to be taxed without allowing for a full deduction of the losses.
